DIY: Throw a Girlfriends' Thanksgiving Brunch (with the Kids)

credit: Country Living

I love any excuse to get my friends together for some girl talk. (Even if it means getting to the theatre an hour early to see Twilight this Friday!)

I had plans to throw a little Thanksgiving brunch this month before the Christmas season rolls around and everyone really is too busy to get together. Unfortunately, some things came up, so I'll be saving these notes for next year...or maybe tailoring for Christmas.

The major underlying themes for me this year are simple, inexpensive, and casual.

If I had the time, I'd make some cute invites like this:

But time is short these days, so I'd stick with good old Evite.
If you haven't tried Evite before, it's incredibly easy to sign up, create a cute invitation, and track your guest's responses.

There would be no fancy tablescapes.

This guest list is made up of the juicebox and crackers variety. I think the beauty of my Dining room centerpiece of "sugared" pumpkins, apples, and pinecones would be lost on them.

I love this simple kids' table from Country Living.
The crayons as a centerpiece give the kids something to do while the moms dole out snacks.

I have a small child-size table, but it only seats two and the last thing I need is a rumble over which preschooler gets to sit at the table.

An easy alternative is to create a little picnic area in your Living room. I found these cute plastic Table cloths in Target's $1 bin section, along with the doilies.
You could use the doilies as "coasters" for each child's juice box, and the leftovers can become decorations or craft projects elsewhere.

Speaking of food...if money is tight and you can't afford to feed 8 moms and their kids, make a note in your Evite that this event is a potluck. Each guest can specify in her reply what she'll be bringing so you don't end up with 5 quiches. Think fruit salad, bacon wrapped scallops, mini-quiches, hash brown casserole, muffins....

One of my additions to the buffet table this year would be a new recipe for Pumpkin Spice Muffins that my sister gave me recently. I'll be posting the recipe tomorrow, so be sure to stop by!

Kids are usually fine with goldfish and juiceboxes. Their final course of the morning could be these adorable Turkey Cookies from Pillsbury. I am so trying these!

To keep the kiddos occupied while the moms enjoy brunch, visit websites like Family Fun or Kaboose for fun and easy printable Thanksgiving-themed coloring pages. Hand out some crayons from The Dollar Tree, and you're guaranteed at least 30 seconds of chatting/eating time with your friends.

When the bebes tire of artwork after those 30 seconds, put on a Thanksgiving video like "Garfield's Thanksgiving" (my girls love it!). If you have Verizon's digital cable, you can find free cartoons saved by theme/current holiday.

If you are a good mom ambitious, you could also visit the aforementioned sites for supervised craft ideas. Me, I tend to crave grown-up time...any grown-up time, and I know my girls would be fine playing with their friends or (gasp!) watching a short video so Mommy doesn't go bananas.

When the moms have scarfed down all the delicious food they brought to share, have everyone gather together for a game of "Pin the Hat on the Turkey."

I found this game last year in Target's clearance section, and saved it for Natalie's preschool Thanksgiving party. You could easily make your own with some white poster board, brown, red, and yellow crayons and a bunch of different colored construction paper "feathers."

Give the winner (or each child) a lollipop or small prize (Dollar Store necklaces are great), or just let them play until they are exhausted. Then you can sit them down for a story while the moms clean up and get diaper bags and empty platters in the cars.

Twas the Night Before Thanksgiving is super-cute. My girls love the rhymes, the illustrations, and the story of the family gathering to celebrate. We also enjoy The Story of the Pilgrims, which is a great history lesson for little ones. Although now Natalie (almost 4) wants to know if the Indians will be dining with us next Thursday.

I hope you found some fun ideas today. Please visit Kimba at A Soft Place to Land for more fabulous Do It Yourself project ideas!

Thrifty Thursday: It's Chic to Be Cheap {26}

It's Day #12 of 27 Days of Thankful. Click the link to find out what's going on here every day in November until Thanksgiving Day.

A week or two ago, Michaela Byrd and I strolled through the aisles of my own personal Mecca Target while Natalie was at preschool. We were able to stroll because I had only one child with me and therefore did not have to pry children off of each other or answer repeated questions about why the "Target people" do not live at the store.

As much as I tried to resist, the commercial glow of the Christmas section lured me in like a siren.

I was particularly drawn to the card area.

I've spent $20 on a box of Christmas cards before, just because they said "Hallmark" on the back.

No more.

I'm not a fan of wordy braggy holiday newsletters, and these gorgeous cards from Target make an excellent alternative! Sure, I could try to make my own, but they might not get done until next Christmas and they'd probably end up costing more.

You can't beat $9 a box for some beautifully embellished Christmas cards!

I loooove the buttons and wording on this one. Too cute!

My to-do list includes mailing out our Christmas cards in a timely manner this year. I'm usually pretty good about it, but I have more on my plate this year.

Today, I'm thankful for a thrifty alternative to Hallmark.

Ruffle Bottom

It's Day #11 of 27 Days of Thankful. Click the link to find out what's going on here every day in November until Thanksgiving Day.
I don't think there's much cuter than "ruffle bottoms" on little girls' clothes. I draw the line at wearing ruffle bottoms myself, but I do have a blast shopping for my youngest.

Watching Michaela Byrd, who just turned 22 months, hop and dance around the family room last night made me think about how lucky I am to have two little girls to dress up.

Maybe someday T will have a boy to play soccer with and watch football and do manly things. I promise I won't make him wear ruffle bottoms.

Today I am thankful for little girls' cutesy clothes.

{What are you thankful for today?} Seriously, y'all have to be thankful for something...I have over 200 Followers and I haven't seen many comments on these posts. Are you guys having a hard Thanksgiving season? Just wonderin'....

Tasty Tuesday: Best Ever Pumpkin Bread (and Day #10)

It's Day #10 of 27 Days of Thankful. Click the link to find out what's going on here every day in November until Thanksgiving Day.

I wait all year long for the season to be right to make some pumpkin bread.

It just doesn't feel right to bake up a batch of Autumn deliciousness when it's 95 degrees outside.

We're finally experiencing some Fall weather here in Virginia, and I couldn't resist baking last night. T was pleasantly surprised when he came home from work, and I thought I'd share the recipe with you today. I've had it so long now that I'm not sure where I first found it, but it's too easy and delicious to not share with my blogging friends.

Best Ever Pumpkin Bread

Ingredients:
3 1/2 cups unsifted, all purpose flour
2 t. baking soda
1 t. cinnamon
1/2 t. double acting baking powder
1/2 t. all spice
2 2/3 cups sugar
1 cup vegetable oil
4 eggs
1/3 cup water
One Can (16 oz) pumpkin
(1/2 cup chopped walnuts or pecans are optional)

Directions:
Preheat your oven to 350 degrees F. Grease two 9x5 loaf pans (I just have one large pan and one small pan, and I divide the batter between them...works for me!) Combine flour and next four ingredients. Set aside. In a large bowl, beat sugar and vegetable oil. Beat well. Add eggs, water, and pumpkin. Beat well. Gradually add in dry ingredients. Stir until just blended. (Stir in nuts if you're adding those)

Divide batter into two loaf pans. Bake at 350 degrees F for 55 to 60 minutes, or until toothpick inserted in center of loaf comes out clean.

*Note: Don't mess up and bake it at 250 degrees. This will greatly extend your baking time. I know this, because I did it last night. For the life of me, I couldn't figure out why my dang bread was taking so long to bake. Then I noticed that I had not set the oven correctly. Ummm.....

You could also add chocolate chips, or make a cream cheese icing to drizzle on top. So many variations!
I enjoyed mine last night with a mug of the mocha mix stuff. Yum to the bread, yuck to the mocha mix.

Bon Appetit! Check out Jen's Tasty Tuesday party for more great recipes.

Today, I am thankful for delicious Fall recipes that bring a smile to my family's face.

If you link up, please be aware that this is a party for bloggers to list what they are thankful for. I had a blogger link up some craft projects yesterday, which is fine if that's what she's thankful for, but her post didn't really mention that part. Thanks for playing nice, guys!
